Nothing says “fall is here” quite like a homemade apple pie using fresh apples from the orchard. With its satisfying and flaky crust that uses no dairy traditionally associated with pie dough, this apple pie – adapted by the 1440 Multiversity culinary team to be vegan and gluten-free – makes for a perfect sweet treat whether enjoying for dessert or sneaking a piece for breakfast.

Pie Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups oat flour
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp. Earth Balance or equivalent non-dairy butter
  • 3 Tbsp. water (cold)

Apple Pie Filling Ingredients

  • 3 cups baking apples; peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup cane sugar
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp. Earth Balance or equivalent non-dairy butter (optional for added richness)

Streusel Topping Ingredients

  • 1 cup gluten-free oats
  • 1 cup almond meal
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup Earth Balance or equivalent non-dairy butter
  • 1/4 tsp. sea salt

Additional Notes

The pie dough recipe can be made ahead of time, however once you roll the dough out and place it in the pie tin, you will want to bake as soon as possible. Letting the dough sit in the tin unbaked will result in the dough becoming soggy, and you will lose the flaky crust.
